Tashi Lhunpo Monastery, located in Shigatse, which is the second largest city in Tibet, is one of the most significant Gelug Sect monasteries within Tibetan Buddhism in Tibet. It was established by the 1st Dalai Lama Gendun Drupa in 1447 who was a disciple of Je Tsongkapa, the founder of the Gelug Sect in Tibetan Buddhism.

 According to historical records, the monastery gained great prominence after its abbot Lobsang Choekyi Gyentsen was recognized as the 1st Pachen Lama in the 16th century, regarded as the manifestation of Amitabha by 5th Dalai Lama.

  1. The Chapel of the Future Buddha (Maitreya) – Jamkhang Chenmo

The principal allure of the monastery is the chapel housing the Future Buddha, Gyawa Jampa. This enshrines the largest Golden Buddha Statue globally.

  1. Victory Chapel –Namgyel Lhakhang

The Victory Chapel, positioned at the heart of the monastery, contains the statue of Je Tsongkhapa , Maitreya and Manjushri.

  1. Tomb of 10th Panchen Lama –Serdum Sesum Namgyel

The 10th Panchen Lama was among the most renowned Lamas in Tibet and served as the head of the Tashi Lhunpo monastery. He passed away in 1989. Inside this chapel, one can behold the tomb stupa of the 10th Panchen Lama and the Kalachakra Mandala.

  1. Tomb of the 4th Panchen Lama – Kundun Lhakhang

This chapel with a resplendent golden roof safeguards the tomb of the 4th Panchen Lama, Lobsang Choekyi Gyentsen, who was the teacher of the 5th Dalai Lama. Remarkably, it is the sole chapel that endured without being damaged during the upheaval of the Cultural Revolution in Tibet.
