Pabongga Monastery, one of the most ancient monasteries in Tibet, predates both the Potala Palace and Jokhang Temple. The name “Pabong” in Tibetan means “giant rock.” It was here that the 33rd Tibetan King engaged in meditation. Numerous other Tibetan Kings also chose this site for retreat and hermitage.
The 33rd King Songtsen Gampo was renowned for his wisdom and valor. He dispatched 16 brilliant students to India for study Sanskrit and other languages and writing system, accompanied by Thonmi Sambhota. Thonmi was the only student to return to Tibet. With the knowledge and wisdom he acquired, the king and minister together created a writing system suitable for the Tibetan language. Thus, Phabongkha is regarded as the origin of the Tibetan alphabet.
Despite of having endured significant damage during various historical epochs, it remains a profoundly spiritual destination worthy of visitation today.
