Ramoche Temple was erected in the 7th century by the then Tibetan King Songtsen Gampo. The main intention behind its construction was to enshrine the Buddha statue Jowo Shakya Muni, which was brought by his Chinese wife, Princess Wenchen of the Tang Dynasty.
The temple was initially built in a Chinese architectural style, and its entrance gate faced eastward, towards China.
Subsequently, after enduring several fires, the temple was reconstructed in the Tibetan style.
At present, the principal attraction within the temple is the Buddha statue of Jowo Mikyo Dorje, which was brought by the Nepali princess. It is said that Princess Wencheng was concerned that the Chinese army might attempt to retrieve the Jowo Shakya Muni statue and thus concealed it in one of the hidden chapels of Jokhang. After the king’s passing, the Tibetans relocated the statue to Ramoche Temple.
This temple is an essential religious site worth visiting. It is merely a 15 – 20 minutes’ walk from Jokhang. The temple bears great significance in Tibetan Buddhism. It will offer an unforgettable religious experience and enrich your understanding of the local culture.
