The Lhalu Wetland, located in the northwest of Lhasa City, Tibet Autonomous Region, is the world’s highest-altitude and largest urban natural wetland. It is the main source of oxygen supply for Lhasa City and is known as the “Lungs of Lhasa”.

Autumn in Lhasa is dry with little rain. However, when you step into this place, the air in the wetland is filled with the fragrance of soil and plants, making people feel relaxed and happy.

In recent years, through a series of ecological civilization construction and protection work in Lhasa City, the ecological environment of the wetland has been significantly improved, attracting hundreds of species of birds to inhabit and stay. Many “rare guests” have become “regular guests”.

 According to the latest survey results in 2023, a total of 167 species of birds have been recorded in the Lalu Wetland Reserve, and the number of migratory birds spending the winter in the wetland has increased significantly, representing the continuous improvement of the ecological quality and functions of the Lalu Wetland

In the early morning, there are continuous streams of tourists in the Lalu Wetland. The locals walk kora around the Lalu Wetland and do the picnics with families and friend in summer.

This wetland presents another excellent option for a short excursion and ranks among the top spots for photography.

For tourists visiting the wetland, there are two alternatives. One can either plan a full-day tour filled with activities such as taking pictures and strolling with the locals along the kora, or make a brief visit to the main center of the wetland after touring the Drepung monastery.
