Mindrolling Monastery, a jewel within Tibetan Buddhism, stands as the largest of the Nyingmapa sect and is counted among the six principal Nyingmapa monasteries in Tibet. This resplendent monastery, founded by Rigzin Terdak Lingpa, is nestled in Zhanang County, Shannan Prefecture, within the Tibet Autonomous Region of China.
The lineage of Mindrolling Monastery is hereditary, and Terdak Lingpa’s lineage is renowned as the “Nyo” lineage. In Tibetan, the name signifies “Place of Perfect Emancipation,” hinting at the profound spiritual essence it embodies.
The monastery’s focus is singularly dedicated to the in-depth study of Buddhist scriptures, astronomy, the Tibetan lunar calendar, calligraphy, rhetoric, and Traditional Tibetan Medicines. Monks have long engaged in the rigorous study of thirteen major Sutra and Tantra texts of the Nyingmapa, thereby preserving and propagating the rich religious and intellectual heritage.
However, its history is marked by trials. In 1718, it endured severe destruction at the hands of the Dzungar Mongols from East Turkestan. But like a phoenix rising from the ashes, it was rebuilt during the reign of the 7th Dalai Lama. Subsequently, under the watchful supervision of his son Dungsay Rinchen Namgyel and daughter Jetsunma Mingyur Paldro, the monastery was painstakingly reconstructed, regaining its former glory and significance.
