Overview

Yachen Gar situated in an isolated valley of Pelyul County, Garze Tibetan Autonomous Prefecture (Sichuan), Yachen Monastery (Yachen Gar) sits at 4,000 meters above sea level, 400km from Chengdu.

Surrounded by grassy hills and crisscrossed by rivers, this sacred site of the Nyingma Tradition was founded in 1985 by the revered meditation master Khenpo Achuk Rinpoche.

Spiritual Life

Today, there are around 10,000 practitioners and most of them are nuns, drawn by the pure Dharma teachings. They live in simple mud-and-wood huts built with their own hands along the riverbanks, separated by gender as per strict disciplines: men may never enter the nuns’ area, a serene enclave called “Jomo Island.”

Life here is rooted in devotion and resilience. In winter, temperatures plummet to -25°C, but practitioners endure (100-day retreat) in tiny huts, wrapped only in blankets, focusing on meditation.

Yet warmth abounds nuns help each other build houses, cook for fellow practitioners during festivals, and greet visitors with gentle smiles.

Festivals & Experience

Summer (July to mid-August) is the best time to visit. The valley blooms green, and the grand religious ceremony unfolds on the vast grassland.

Thousands of followers gather to listen to masters’ teachings, while nuns perform the sacred Cham dance. A giant golden Guru Padmasambhava statue overlooks the venue, adding to the solemnity.

Facilities have improved roads are smoother, making supplies easier to transport. Near the entrance, small guesthouses and restaurants cater for travelers, but book early during festivals.

Yachen Monastery isn’t just a tourist spot; it’s a living testament to faith. Wandering the quiet paths, you’ll feel the peace of practitioners’ daily chants and the warmth of their humble hospitality—a truly unforgettable touch of Tibetan spirituality.
