Overview

Mindrolling Monastery, whose name means “Sublime Island of Ripening Liberation,” is one of the most revered Six Mother Monasteries of the Nyingma school in Tibet. Founded in 1676 by Rigzin Terdak Lingpa, it carries the sacred Nyo lineage and stands as a living treasure of Tibetan Buddhism.

Located in Zhanang County, Shannan Prefecture — the historic heartland of UTsang — it lies just 43 kilometers east of Lhasa Airport, on the peaceful south bank of the Tsangpo River, making it highly accessible for travelers exploring southern Tibet.

History & Legacy

The monastery has witnessed profound history. Severely damaged by Dzungar Mongol forces in 1718, it was rebuilt under the Seventh Dalai Lama, led by the founder’s son and daughter. For nearly 300 years, Mindrolling served as a prestigious monastic university, nurturing scholars and yogis from all over Tibet.

It was renowned not only for Buddhist sutra and tantra studies but also for astronomy, the Tibetan calendar, calligraphy, rhetoric, and traditional Tibetan medicine. Monks here mastered thirteen core scriptures and precious terma teachings, especially those from Terdak Lingpa’s lineage. At its height, it governed over a hundred branch monasteries, and its throne holder was deeply respected across Tibet.

Experience

Though the site suffered some damage during cultural revolution, it was less destructive than many other major monasteries. Today, careful reconstruction continues, reviving its ancient beauty and spiritual atmosphere.

For visitors, Mindrolling offers more than architecture and history — it is a place to experience authentic monastic culture, quiet devotion, and the profound wisdom of Tibet’s ancient learning tradition. A visit here connects you deeply to the soul of Tibetan Buddhism and the quiet, enduring spirit of Shannan’s sacred land.
