Overview

Gyanak Mani Temple sits in Senzi Town, Yushu Tibetan Autonomous Prefecture, Qinghai. Just 6 kilometers from downtown Yushu, it takes only 10 to 15 minutes by car to reach this sacred place.

It is home to the world’s largest Mani Stone Field, a breathtaking sight of faith. Spread across one square kilometre, over 200 to 300 million carved prayer stones stack 3 metres high, forming a rectangular compound (100 metres long and 55 metres wide). Every stone is engraved with Buddha images, sacred sutras, and the six-syllable mantra Om Mani Padme Hum—a simple yet profound blessing for compassion and peace.

History & Belief

Founded by the abbot of Jegu Monastery (a Sakya sect temple), the stone mound has grown taller year after year. Pilgrims add a Mani stone each time they pass, turning a small pile into a grand shrine. Locals also believe this was once a resting place for Chinese Buddhist monk Dangsing Lama on his journey to India, giving it the name Gyanak Mani (Chinese Mani).

Inside the compound, you’ll find a main temple hall, small shrines, prayer wheel halls, and a butter lamp hall. Stone statues and stupas dot the site, blending art and devotion.

Visitor Experience

After the 2010 Yushu earthquake, the site was carefully restored with clear paths, making it easy to walk around. There are about 100 prayer wheels on the east side, and visitors should follow the tradition of circumambulating clockwise.

The area has local shops, guesthouses, and skilled Mani stone craftsmen. On Tibetan full-moon days and during the annual Sakya Monlam Chenmo (January, a week-long grand prayer for world peace), thousands of pilgrims gather to prostrate and pray. The festival ends with a white shell blown from the temple roof, a gentle symbol of closure.

Travel Tips

The best time to visit is summer and early autumn, with smooth roads and comfortable weather. More than a tourist spot, Gyanak Mani is a warm, living testament to Tibetan faith—where every stone holds a wish, and every step brings peace.
