The Potala Palace Lhasa is one of the most important religious, cultural and history figure in Tibet. From a distance, its majestic appearance is a sight to behold, and its interior showcases a unique structure. It symbolizes the profound spiritual and cultural bond of the Tibetan people. It was inscribed as a UNESCO World Heritage Site in 1994.

Brief History of Potala Palace

History of Potala Palace is a mystery. Its construction dates to the 7th century during the reign of the 33rd King of Tibet, Songtsen Gampo, who unified the entire Tibetan Plateau and was famed for his far-sightedness and courage.

It was during his reign that the present Tibetan script was devised. He dispatched 16 intelligent students to India, among whom Thomei Sambota was the sole one to return to Tibet. Through his research and studies, he formulated the current Tibetan script as the common writing system across Tibet.

This palace locates at the core of Lhasa; it stands atop a red mountain called Markpo Ri in Tibetan. The palace comprises two main sections, namely the Red Palace and the White Palace.

The Red Palace was primarily dedicated to religious functions and housed numerous halls and chapels. The main allure of the palace includes the tombs of former Dalai Lamas. The White Palace was the main Tibetan Government Administration center after relocating from Drepung monastery.

Potala Palace is the main tourist destination in Lhasa. The things to see in Potala Palace will amaze you, beside the most venerated chapel within is the Phakpa Lhakang, which enshrines the self-rising image of Avalokiteshvara, many chapels in Potala Palace houses precious Buddhist statues, and tombs of Dalai Lamas.

At present, in every year, there are millions of visitors from Mainland China and tourists from all around the world. To ensure the safety and preservation of the palace, the administrative department has imposed a limit on the daily number of visitors.

During the peak tourist season in summer, there is an enormous demand for entry tickets. So, the best time to visit Potala Palace is in winter as there are fewer tourists compared to summer.

3: Military Permit

The Military Permits as you can see from the word, this permit is related to military department, thus, this travel document is mainly issued by the military authority in Tibet, in fact, this permit is compulsory for entering to any border regions between China and neighboring countries. Military permits are required for visiting following places in Tibet apart from TTP.

  • Ali (Far Western Tibet)
  • Guge Kingdom (Far Western Tibet)
  • Gyirong (New Border to Nepal)
  • Lake Manasarovar (Near Mt. Kailash in Far Western Tibet)
  • Kailash (Western Tibet)
  • Nyima country (Border country between Ali and Nakchu Prefecture)
  • Cochin

Tibet Travel Permit (TTP) is the basic required permit to travel to Tibet Autonomous Region (TAR), every foreign travelers must need Tibet Travel Permit to enter to Tibet along with your Chinese Visa or Tibet Group Visa. Though it seems very hard or confusing, it just takes few simple steps, and your travel agency will do the rest.

Tibet Travel Permit is mainly obtained from Tibet Tourism Bureau in Lhasa, Tibet, which contains the tourist’s information and confirmed itineraries.

According to the latest Chinese regulations for foreign visitors, passports must have a validity of six months (at least) to apply for a Chinese visa. This requirement also applies when traveling to Tibet along with Tibet Travel Permit.
