Overview

Siling Tso Lake located in Nakchu Prefecture, stands as Tibet’s largest lake and China’s second-largest saltwater lake at 4,530 meters above sea level.

This sacred water body was once known as the “Devil Lake” in Tibetan legend—said to be where Padmasambhava subdued an evil spirit, guarded by seven stone hills on its southern shore.

The lake’s turquoise water stretches 2,391 square kilometers, surrounded by vast alpine meadows where yaks graze lazily and pilgrims’ prayer flags flutter in the breeze.

Wildlife & Nature

Established in 1993, the 400,000-hectare national reserve protects over 120 bird species, including the endangered black-necked crane, as well as Tibetan antelopes and wild donkeys often spotted along the lakeside.

Summer (June-October) is ideal—wildflowers bloom, birds gather on islets, and local herders welcome visitors with butter tea in black tents.

Experience

For travelers, it’s a serene escape: drive 6 hours from Lhasa to soak in the quiet magic.

Even a short stop feels profound: the lake’s calm reflects snow-capped peaks, and the crisp air carries the distant chants of nomads, blending nature’s grandeur with warm human connection.

Stick to marked paths to avoid marshes, and refrain from disturbing wildlife for a respectful, memorable visit.
