Overview

Tholing monastery is situated in Zanda County, Ngari, Tholing means “flying in the sky and never falling” in Tibetan, it is more than a sacred site—it’s a living story of faith and art. Founded in 997 AD by Guge King Yeshe O and master translator Rinchen Sangpo, this 1,000-year-old monastery blends Tibetan, Indian, and Nepalese styles, a gift from ancient craftsmen.

Sacred Halls

Wander through its three surviving halls: the Red Temple (Dukhang) dazzles with murals of Shakyamuni Buddha’s life, painted in gilded copper by Kashmiri artists—bring a flashlight to unlock their soft 13th-century hues.

The White Temple’s two cedar columns (shipped all the way from India, a miracle in treeless Zanda) frame well-preserved female Bodhisattva murals, pure Guge art at its best.

Don’t miss the mandala-shaped central chapel, once housing a 3D universe symbol for monks’ meditation.

Experience

Outside, rows of restored chortens glow gold at sunset, while cliff-side meditation caves whisper of monks’ summer retreats. Locals say the monastery breathes with the Guge Kingdom’s legacy—500 monks once prayed here, their spirits lingering in the quiet courtyards.

Easy to reach on foot from Zanda town, Tholing feels intimate yet grand. Its mud-brick walls and faded murals carry the warmth of human devotion, making every step a conversation with the past.
