Overview

Kading Waterfall situates just 24 kilometers from Bayi Town in Nyingchi, when suddenly you’re greeted by a sign that says “Kading”—which in Tibetan means “heaven on earth”. You’ve arrived at one of Tibet’s most magical hidden gems: Kading Waterfall, also known as Tianfo (Heavenly Buddha) Waterfall.

The First Glimpse

As you step into the valley, the air grows cool and fresh, filled with the scent of pine and wildflowers. A gentle trail leads you deeper, following the sound of rushing water.

Then—there it is. A 200-meter waterfall cascading down a sheer cliff face, like a silver ribbon dancing in the wind. In the rainy season (June–August), it thunders with power; in drier months, it’s a delicate veil of mist.

But here’s the magic: look closely at the cliff behind the falls. Through the swirling water, you’ll see something extraordinary—a naturally formed Buddha face (Maitreya, the Future Buddha) staring back at you. Locals say this is the protector of Nyingchi, watching over the land and all who visit.

The Guardians

If you squint a little harder, you’ll notice more. To the Buddha’s right stands a 100-meter-tall figure of Palden Lhamo (the female guardian deity), her veil fluttering in the mist, holding prayer beads.

To the left, a smaller form of Tara (the Goddess of Compassion) seems to offer blessings with an outstretched hand.

These aren’t carvings—they’re nature’s art, shaped over centuries by water and wind. Tibetans believe only those with pure hearts can see all three clearly.
