Brief History of Potala Palace

istory of Potala Palace is a mystery. Its construction dates to the 7th century during the reign of the 33rd King of Tibet, Songtsen Gampo, who unified the entire Tibetan Plateau and was famed for his far-sightedness and courage. It was during his reign that the present Tibetan script was devised.

He dispatched 16 intelligent students to India, among whom Thomei Sambota was the sole one to return to Tibet. Through his research and studies, he formulated the current Tibetan script as the common writing system across Tibet.

The Red Palace

Located at the center, primarily dedicated to religious functions. It houses numerous halls, chapels, and the tombs of former Dalai Lamas, which are the main allure of the palace.

The White Palace

Served as the main Tibetan Government Administration center after relocating from Drepung monastery. It stands atop the red mountain called Markpo Ri.

A Tourist's Dream: Potala Palace is the main tourist destination in Lhasa. The things to see will amaze you. Besides the most venerated chapel Phakpa Lhakang (enshrining Avalokiteshvara), many chapels house precious Buddhist statues.
