Barkhor Street

As its core, the Barkhor is a pilgrim circuit where devotees walk clockwise around the Jokhang Temple. Beyong its spiritual role, it is a hub of market activity, a remarkable pilgrim assembly, and a window into Tibet’s culture. All along the route, shops, stalls, teahouses, and hawkers abound, with a diverse range of goods sure to please Tibetans: prayer flags, block prints of sacred scriptures, turquoise, jewelry, Tibetan boots, yak butter, and incense included.
