Overview

Dorje Drak Monastery is one of Nyingma's two core mother monasteries (with Mindrolling), specializing in "Northern Treasures" Term. Moved to current "Vajra Cliff" site in 1632, named after a natural vajra-shaped rock. The monastery was damaged in 1717 by Dzungar mogolians and during cultural revolution, at present, partially restored and remains peaceful and less crowded.

Rigzin Rinpoche who was considered Padmanabha’s incarnation and the monastery follows the hereditary lineage of Rigzin Rinpoche, current the 10th Rinpoche who resides in Lhasa.

Assembly Hall

Must-See Attractions of the Monastery: Assembly Hall contains murals of Padmasambhava's eight forms, Godemchen, and hundreds of Buddha/Bodhisattva statues; rebuilt Sakyamuni clay statue flanked by eight Bodhisattvas; Mahakala in protector chapel.

Hidden Gems

Oldest chapel with natural rock Chenrezig; 2nd-floor chapel (Longchenpa, Three Longevity Deities), library with Kangyur/Tengyur scriptures.

Wild Goats: Friendly "Nayak" goats roam freely, adding joy.

Kora & Festival: Walk the circumambulation path to see the vajra rock, carved mantras, and Padmasambhava's footprint; summit offers hermitage ruins and panoramic river/valley views. Annual Dorje Drak Tsechu (10th day of 6th Tibetan month) features masked dances and scripture recitations.

3: Military Permit

The Military Permits as you can see from the word, this permit is related to military department, thus, this travel document is mainly issued by the military authority in Tibet, in fact, this permit is compulsory for entering to any border regions between China and neighboring countries. Military permits are required for visiting following places in Tibet apart from TTP.

  • Ali (Far Western Tibet)
  • Guge Kingdom (Far Western Tibet)
  • Gyirong (New Border to Nepal)
  • Lake Manasarovar (Near Mt. Kailash in Far Western Tibet)
  • Kailash (Western Tibet)
  • Nyima country (Border country between Ali and Nakchu Prefecture)
  • Cochin

Tibet Travel Permit (TTP) is the basic required permit to travel to Tibet Autonomous Region (TAR), every foreign travelers must need Tibet Travel Permit to enter to Tibet along with your Chinese Visa or Tibet Group Visa. Though it seems very hard or confusing, it just takes few simple steps, and your travel agency will do the rest.

Tibet Travel Permit is mainly obtained from Tibet Tourism Bureau in Lhasa, Tibet, which contains the tourist’s information and confirmed itineraries.

According to the latest Chinese regulations for foreign visitors, passports must have a validity of six months (at least) to apply for a Chinese visa. This requirement also applies when traveling to Tibet along with Tibet Travel Permit.
