Overview

Dege Publisher store located in Dege County, Garze Tibetan Autonomous Prefecture, Sichuan, on the east bank of the Yangtze River, Dege Sutra-Printing House (Dege Parkhang) sits quietly amid snow-capped mountains.

Its name means "land of benevolence" in Tibetan, and this seclusion has gently guarded its ancient traditions for centuries.

Founded in 1729 by Chokyi Tenpa Tsering, it is the largest of the three major sutra-printing houses in Tibetan areas, housing over 200,000 woodblocks—nearly 70% of Tibet's literary heritage.

These blocks cover Buddhist classics, medicine, literature, astronomy, and more, with the Qing Dynasty edition of the Tibetan Buddhist canon being its most famous treasure.

Traditional Craftsmanship

What makes it truly special is its unbroken traditional craftsmanship. Even today, no machines are used, every step is done by hand.

Craftsmen carve deep, elegant scripts on red birch woodblocks, which are smoked, boiled, sunned, and polished to last for centuries.

The paper, made from Daphne plant roots, goes through washing, steaming, and polishing, becoming durable, ink-absorbent, and bug-resistant.

Heritage & Experience

Though it paused operations from 1958 to 1979, it resumed in 1979 and has thrived ever since. Designated a national key cultural relic in 1996, it is more than a printing house—it's a living museum.

Watching local artisans press ink onto woodblocks, their hands moving slowly and reverently, you can feel the weight of history and the warmth of heritage.

Dege Parkhang isn't just a place; it's the soul of Tibetan culture, kept alive by the quiet dedication of its people.
