Location and Accessibility of Nyethang Giant Buddha

On

the drive from Lhasa Gonggar Airport to downtown (about 20km away), a striking painted Buddha on the cliff side will catch your eye—that’s Nyethang Giant Buddha, Tibet’s largest cliff-carved stone statue. Standing 9.8 meters tall, the seated Sakyamuni Buddha wears a gentle smile, his lines bold yet warm, visible even from afar.

A moment in history that chose to remain.

Locals love sharing its story, 700 years ago, the great master Phags-pa carried a Buddha statue back to Tibet. When passing here, the statue “spoke” and wished to stay—so Phags-pa ordered this giant carving to honor the wish. Today, you’ll see countless white scarfs draped on the cliff; tossing one high up is a way to send sincere blessings, and local villagers will happily show you how.

Morning is best for photos, sunlight bathes the Buddha, making its colors glow. Afterward, wander to nearby Nyethang Tara Temple, where master Atisha once taught Buddhism for nine years. Chat with the temple monks or sip sweet tea at a roadside family shop—locals love talking about the Buddha’s blessings.

This quiet spot isn’t just a photo stop, it’s a chance to feel Tibet’s faith and warmth. As you stand before the ancient Buddha, surrounded by fluttering white scarfs and soft prayers, you’ll understand why it’s been comforting travelers and locals alike for centuries
