Locals love sharing its story, 700 years ago, the great master Phags-pa carried a Buddha statue back to Tibet. When passing here, the statue “spoke” and wished to stay—so Phags-pa ordered this giant carving to honor the wish. Today, you’ll see countless white scarfs draped on the cliff; tossing one high up is a way to send sincere blessings, and local villagers will happily show you how.
Morning is best for photos, sunlight bathes the Buddha, making its colors glow. Afterward, wander to nearby Nyethang Tara Temple, where master Atisha once taught Buddhism for nine years.
